OpenAEC Foundation has published an open source software ecosystem for the AEC sector, covering buildings, infrastructure, civil engineering, and site workflows. The project presents a broad catalogue of tools including Open PDF Studio, Open 2D Studio, Open CAD Studio, Open Geotechniek Studio, Monty IFC Viewer, BIM Validator, Open Energy Studio, Open Field Studio, BCF Manager Studio, and others, with source code collected under the OpenAEC Foundation GitHub organisation.
The published 2026 roadmap sets a goal of making the full ecosystem production-ready by the end of 2026. OpenAEC describes a shared architecture around Rust, Tauri, WebAssembly, browser and desktop delivery, and IFCX as an open data format connected to buildingSMART IFC concepts, with planned coverage across IFC building and infrastructure domains such as IfcRoad, IfcRail, IfcBridge, IfcTunnel, and IfcMarineFacility.
There is also an active OSArch community discussion about the scope and maturity of the initiative. The discussion highlights interest in the ambition of a coordinated open AEC stack, while also raising practical questions about product readiness, governance, AI-assisted development, standards alignment, and how the ecosystem relates to existing free software projects.
